Horror In Art!

Instead of a silly Saturday I have something pretty awesome to show you guys! I went to London with some pals and my partner yesterday and in Camden market there is a stall that personalises wooden bears and I spotted this guy.

I didn't ask how much cus I had a feeling over £20 but those are pretty cool!

SAW TORTURE FILM FAN HACKED MATE TO DEATH

Headline from a UK paper 'The Sun' from last Thursday. I admit I only read the paper when I'm waiting to start work or go home but that's not the point.

Now I know this is something that's been in media for years. Violent video games cause kids to go on killing rampages, car games fuel road rage and that Marylin Manson fella will make your kids worship Satan etc.. But this article is fucking bull shit.

Violent people will lash out and be violent due to their nature, maybe sometimes there is something that triggers their actions sometimes but to say any ONE thing makes a person do what they do is naive. Once again it's easier to blame things like violent games and movies then shine a light on the bad parenting and the state of our times.

Not once did the article say the killer SAID it was due to an obsession with SAW he was simply asked "It sounded like the gruesome torture film SAW?" to which he replied "Yeah, like that"

I take articles like this with a pinch of salt as it's a shock value piece but as an avid fan of the 'Horror' genre and a fan of SAW I had to make this entry. Almost every DVD I own is horror where something nasty happens or there is an element of death and gore but that doesn't mean I have a dark urge to kill people.

To suggest it was due to simply owning the entire collection is such a load of crap. Did he also own all of 'Peppa Pig' and 'Spunge Bob'? Heard people talk to pigs and dress them up and oh try and live in a pineapple under the sea, awful stuff those shows.

SAW is a violent and gory movie, yes and this is what people focused on when they raided his home., If it hadn't been SAW it would have been the next blame able object.

Society is to blame for people like this and the actions they take, stop trying to buck the blame and sort out the hole that is current times.

The Tortured

The Tortured
2010

The Tortured is by a writer of SAW and to be honest when that is the bragging line on any movie DVD case it's cause to walk the other way and pretend we never ever saw it, but in the sales it was £3 and I was in a buying mood to add to my ever growing collection of horror movies.

Now I was slapped in the face with this movie, soon as I saw ol' TWISTED PICTURES come up I gave up faith on this being a good movie but Jesus even now my stomach feels like it's jumping, this movie is the most gory movie I have ever seen it made SAW look tame, it's like they saved all their good stuff for this movie.

The plot was gripping and the action started right away, it's about the 'perfect' married couple who have it all, big awesome house, adorable son and then it goes tits up, their son is captured and murdered by a nutjob, he is found and brought to justice and it's found he has killed so many kids.

In a bid to find out the other kids that he murdered identity's they give the man 25 years to life a lighter sentence then he would have got, the two torn married people aren't pleased and between being angry and torn with anguish about their dead son they set out to kidnap the killer and get their own back for their son.
The most gory scenes I have seen are in this movie, if you do not like needles then this movie will fuck you up, there is alot that bothers me in this movie, I confess it takes alot to gore me out, honestly. I can sit and watch zombie movies and crave KFC and watch most SAW's with a shrug but the needles... the nail stuff... ugh gross.

The story is powerfully acted and you feel for the parents of the dead kid and all away through the movie you feel for them and think this man is getting what comes to him and as horrid as it is you've felt and been moved by the couple that your on their side, but as the plot goes on you soon find something out and you feel very bad and doubt yourself.

The ending is a killer.

Going into this movie with so many doubts I was very pleasantly surprised. Well done movie. It had some cliche bits but the horror genre as a whole has alot of that so I excused it.

It is also very much got SAW all over it, from what the two parents say to what happens but if you try ignore that and see it as it's own movie then you'll enjoy it.

Gore: 5/5
Plot: 5/5
Acting: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

The Faces Of Horror

When people think of horror they think of the old school faces of horror like Freddy, Jason and Mike Myers and their very long list of franchises. The villain from SCREAM is also a face of horror even if the list of those movies are on one hand you get his mask sold all over the western world on Halloween and in fancy dress stores and he has become one of the iconic symbols of the horror genre.

I think our generations 'face of horror' has to be Jigsaw from SAW, the movie has been out every year running now and Jigsaw is the new icon for horror for this age what with the SAW movies being current and a lengthy 7 [and counting] movies long. It's funny though how Jigsaw has been put up there with such icons of horror, he unlike all the others was never 'bad' or 'evil' or even 'supernatural' like some of/all of our other best friends. He is just a dying man who felt he needed to teach people a lesson, one that would 'help them' a good idea maybe but poorly executed.

But hey.. he spent all of movie 1 playing dead and became such a popular face so he must be doing well, and fuck! he died in THREE and there is SEVEN movies! he's doing very well in legend if you consider that!

So to avoid making this a SAW post. I think we should take a little look at what I consider the 'icons' of horror.

Friday The 13th
The owner of the biggest list of movies is this, Friday the 13th. First movie made back in 1980 and the last movie made in 2009 making this a 29 year old franchise! Our hero is the lovely Jason Voorhees who made hockey masks totally part of fashion statements everywhere.

Halloween

Our second biggest franchise with a stomping ten tittles to date, first in 1987 and last one made in 2009 making Michael Myers and his parent issues 22 years of gory goodness. Less said about anything Rob Zombie did the better though... right?

A Nightmare On Elmstreet

A personal fav of mine with the oh so awesome but don't let him near your kids Freddy Kruger! 1984 was the start of this loveable fella's career as all round scary mother fucker with the most recent movie being a rather fantastic one may I add being made in 2010. 9 movies long and a lifespan of 26! Though I have a feeling there will be more remakes on their way.

Hellraiser
Making BDSM and pins all the rage it's Pinhead in Hellraiser, who doesn't know about Pinhead? even if you have never seen a horror with him in you just know him and that's a good horror icon along with Freddy and Jason one look and you know who it is and maybe aware of the franchise. 9 movies long also starting at 1987 and the last one only in 2005 or 2011.. depends on who you ask. So this franchise is between 18 and 24 , again depends?

SAW
Now this franchise is just a mere baby at 6 years running but hey, the guy died in three and they are still milking the shit out of it so I'll be here till SAW 29402 comes out. John Kramer being our not so scary bad guy who's love of creepy puppets on tricycles has put him up there with some of the greats.

Final Destination
Not so much a 'face of horror' as a suspect creepy breeze of wind. This franchise shows us that Death has nothing better to do then mess with peoples radios and come up with very long and over the top ways to kill teenagers and young adults. Oh and Death is CLEARLY the wise black coroner who has been in all the movies some how.. Also ANOTHER franchise [Saw..] who kept saying it was going to end and then another came out, but going on what happened in Final Destination 5 it seems that even the creators have decided it's all one big joke. Anyway five movies long and counting this started in 2000 and last movie came out 2011.  This baby is about 11 years which... feels too long.

Scream
Another franchise by Wes Craven, he seems to be pretty good at this horror jazz. Since this movie came out so many lazy and uninspired costumes for Halloween was born, and so many bad 'funny' movies inspired off of it's back. The franchise is only 4 movies long with a huge 11 year break between three and four, maybe more will come? First started in 1996 and last one in 2011 this franchise is 15 years long.. less if they decided to either end at 4 ha.

Hannibal Lecter
Not so much a franchise but very much a horror icon, the movies are amazingly well done and no one could have filled the role better, non horror fans also say what a good movie these are, and everyone knows Hannibal Lecter one way or another.

Ramble over!
